WORK IT!

Hi everyone,

Our garden work day is planned for Saturday, March 31st at 12:30pm.  It will be a very exciting day!  The garden steering committe has been planning the layout this winter with lots of great ideas for our kids.  We will be unloading manure and tilling the ground for the corn project, headed up by our own Carla Stanley, building raised beds, unloading dirt, and planting some plants from the winter sowing project, along with some seeds.  Please bring garden tools; shovels, rakes, wheel barrows, etc.  If the weather is really bad we have a rain date planned for Saturday, April 7th. Same time and same place.

For updated info check out our web address and blog site at https://sites.google.com/site/indianolasschoolgarden/.

I will send out an email Saturday morning if we have to move the work day to April 7th.

Hope to see you on Saturday,
Cindy Gunn

Winter Sowing

Starting Early!

In mid-February, Sue and Shannon's 2nd grade classes experimented with "winter-sowing." Each child picked a seed packet, read how deep to plant their particular seeds, and sowed their seeds in their recyclables. The plastic containers are meant to act as mini-greenhouses, allowing the seeds to germinate on their own outside.

Hopefully, the sprouted plants will be able to be used in the school's garden.

For a while...It looked grim.

But now they are growing like gang-busters!
Upon recent inspection, most seeds had sprouted. Not much luck with the tomato seeds, but these peas had to be opened as they are already too big for their container.

If you are near, feel free to hop up the wall and check on their progress. It is pretty exciting! To learn more about winter sowing go to www.wintersown.org

GARDEN WORK DAY

Saturday, March 31st at 12:30pm
*Please meet in the edible garden.  We will be constructing the raised beds, filling them with soil, and planting some seeds.  Please bring tools and wheel barrels!

SEEMS LIKE SPRING!

Wow what an incredible winter!  The soil is warm and we are ready to get started.  This past winter has been an incredible one for laying the ground work to expand the Outdoor Learning Center.  Our focus has been on the edible garden and dreaming about what we can plant.  If you notice I have been using the word “our” because the Outdoor Learning Center has an official Steering Committee.  The Steering Committee consists of parents, teachers and students from the Ohio State University.  Together, we have been able to plan different programs for groups of students instead of just a select few.  These individuals have spent a number of evenings planning for the upcoming garden season.  I just want to say thank you!  Some things to look forward to:  newly constructed raised beds, corn maize’s, berries, outdoor classroom space, yummy fresh veggies!  I can’t wait!  Here’s to a wonderful growing season!!!

Best Wishes,
Cindy
